My new (second) favorite web browser

FYI: This is the first second generation post

Up until now, I’ve preferred Safari as my second choice for a web browser (Firefox is #1). But I recently downloaded Opera 9.6 just to try it, and I’m pretty impressed.

Opera 9.6 has a clean interface (maybe slightly too minimal), mouse gestures, a clever fit-to-width option, and a “trash can” for recently closed tabs.

Opera also has an simpler (but less advanced) about:config page than Firefox, including a tool that allows you to upload a custom sound when you click on a link, etc.

By default, Opera has a few features I don’t care for. First of all, the reload (refresh) button is doubled up with the stop button, something I just don’t like, because sometimes you need both of them at once. (They’re both available right now on the page I’m writing this post on.)

There are back and forward buttons, but also “fast forward” and “rewind” buttons. Kind of confusing, as well as bringing back those not-so-good memories of VHS tapes.

Aside from features, Opera is noticeably slower than some of the other browsers, but knowing the speed web browsers evolve, Opera 10 will probably change that.

So in conclusion: Will Opera be my second browser of choice? Yes. Does it really have a chance at replacing Firefox as my browser of choice? No.

Here’s the updated list of the top 5 web browsers in order of preference:

  1. Mozilla Firefox
  2. Opera
  3. Apple Safari
  4. Google Chrome
  5. Microsoft Internet Explorer
